Georgian Era Antique Spanish Iberian Rose Cut Diamond Ring Oval Floral Sunburst Cupped Domed Back 18k Gold Silver
ABOUT:
A unique antique ring from Spain. You can see the telltale Iberian antique design, we often find similar fabrication on Portuguese rings from the period which makes sense. This one is what I am calling a cupped design. A gorgeous gold "bowl" with domed back slopes up off the finger to hold a silver sunburst design set with rose cut diamonds with a larger raised rose cut diamond at the center in a cut down silver collet setting.
It's so interesting to see that the silver design floats above the "cupped / bowl" with vacant space behind it but you can't see into it. It is just open work and shadows, with the darkness causing an outline around the silver work.
The diamonds remain quite bright and white with lovely reflective foil that has not rusted or muddied with age. It has a wonderful sparkle and an uncommon design that is super comfortable to wear with the sturdy domed back.
It does have three old hallmarks but I can't decipher them. Two are symbols and one looks like "172 B". I haven't been able to find a good guide book on Iberian hallmarks but it was sold to me as 18k like all the pieces I acquired in Spain and tested to confirm.
Antique box is not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size: 7 1/4
Weight: 4.85 grams
Ring face north south: 15mm by 13mm wide.
7.5mm tall off the finger.
The center diamond is about 4.3mm.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
These settings with the closed backs behind the diamonds should avoid getting wet. Aside from that though, it is a sturdy and well made piece with a nice quality hand feel. The foil is in good condition, still white and reflective, not rusty or muddy. Typical antique rose cuts with some uneven edges and frosty spots. The largest center stone has an unpolished edge on each side but appears complete to the eye in the setting.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
