French Antique .85 Carat Old Mine Cut DIAMOND Linear Tank Ring 18k White Gold Romantic Gift Chunky Belle Epoque Geometric Rectangular .85Ctw

French Antique .85 Carat Old Mine Cut DIAMOND Linear Tank Ring 18k White Gold Romantic Gift Chunky Belle Epoque Geometric Rectangular .85Ctw

I am selling an assortment of vintage to antique jewelry and rings which I have hunted for and gathered from around the world. Some examples seen in the last photo - thanks for stopping by!

ABOUT:

Sparkly geometric 18k white gold and mixed old cut diamonds ring. This one is a Paris find from the Art Deco period, quite sturdy with rectangular ring face. At the center raised in prongs are two old mine cut diamonds and one of the end stones is a transitional cut. For added sparkle there is a line of 10 additional old single cut diamonds, five along each edge. The underside of the ring face has an openwork triangular cutout design. Note the small size, this would make a striking pinky ring, or double check with your local jeweler about sizing - the prongs are in good shape and it appears it has already been sized in the past.

French hallmarks for 18k gold.

Antique box not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.

SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:

Size 3 3/4. It weighs a sturdy 6.5g. The ring face is 11x14mm and it stands 7mm off the finger.
Exact depth and thereby carat weight is unknown as I would never remove the stones but the center diamond is about 4mm with quite a high crown so around .35 carat, the others are 3.5mm and ten in the line above and below are about 1.5mm each. Just using estimates by mm it is around 0.85 carat total weight in diamonds.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
All my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. Typical antique diamonds, the center one has a warm very pale yellow hue. One of the smaller single cuts on one end has a pale greenish yellow hue. It's a personal preference but I find it lovely as many times warm diamonds were chosen intentionally (as was the case with this one being front and center, I assume) and can be sought after by collectors. The other mine cut also has warmth but faces up brighter. The transitional cut (the third of the larger stones) has a frosty appearance from natural inclusions. A few inclusions to some of the smaller diamonds as well but this is seen under magnification as they are littler and add a nice glint of sparkle. A few tiny nicks to the smaller diamonds and on has a frosty flake of loss but again not really eye visible.

But Due to age - please note this is not a mint condition item.

A note about antique diamonds:
The whole "4 C's" of cut, color, clarity, carat didn't come about until the 1940s so prior to that and especially on antique pieces, there was not as much emphasis placed on those things. (Sure people probably appreciated a certain look of a certain diamond as it appeared to the eye but it was not a graded scale like we have today.)
So it is difficult to judge antique stones against modern day diamonds and their grading system. No two old cuts are the same as they were crafted in times lacking any modern standards. The diamond cutters of the time were experts at hand cutting each stone to enhance it which means that even lower color grades can be cut to appear whiter.
It is also interesting that "lower graded" diamonds in today's scale system, were some of the best on the market during this period! So it is less about their grades and more about the unique play of light and color that each one can offer.
I read one article that put it nicely: “When searching for the perfect old cut diamond (for you), you need to view them through different eyes as you would for a modern diamond. Laboratory grading reports don’t offer too much information in regards to the individual beauty or sparkle of an antique diamond. Antique diamonds are judged more on the individual character and uniqueness that each one potentially offers.”
Often there are variations of diamonds in the same piece as the goldsmiths created pieces with the stones they had available to them.
